Wang Gan
Wang Gan, born in August 1960 in Maoshan, Jiangsu Province, is a famous critic, writer and calligrapher. He is currently the deputy editor of the Fiction Selection magazine of the China Writers Association, professor of the Chinese Calligraphy and Sealing Institute, and director of the Chinese Academy of Literary Theory. In 1979, Wang Gan began to publish novels in the Yuhua publication, and since then embarked on the road of literary creation and literary criticism. In the 1990s, the “new realism novel”, advocated by Wang Gan, an editorialist, led the trends of the literary world at that time and interpreted the cadenza movement. Wang Gan has written Wang Gan’s Essays, Wang Meng and Wang Gan Dialogue, The End of the Century Sortie, The Flower of the Ruins, The Southern Literary Style, Silent Night, The Decade of Qianjing, Present, Wang Gan’s Selected Essays, Wang Gan’s Latest Literary Theories, Connected Professions and other academic monographs, commentaries, and essays. Among them, Wang Gan’s Essays won the 5th Lu Xun Literature Prize, and his works have been translated into English, French, and other Western languages.
In the contemporary literary world, Wang Gan presents a literary stance that is full of new and avant-garde spirit and stands at the forefront of the discipline. Wang Gan’s literature was critically influenced by Wang Zengqi, whose work was dilute and introverted, and Wang Meng, whose work was unrestrained. In both prose writing and literary criticism, he uses a kind of “lifestyle” writing. This writing, which comes from life and is fresh and natural, complements his distinctive literary stance and forms the unique writing style of Wang Gan. His prose provides insight into society, realizations about life, examinations of culture, and interpretations of history. With the deeply wise and intelligent thinking of a scholar and the insightful realizations about life of a writer, his prose is condensed into beautiful chapters and the power of literature is used to warm the hearts of the people.
Wang Meng and Wang Gan Dialogue contains a record of the dialogue that took place between the writers Wang Meng and Wang Gan from the end of 1988 to the beginning of 1989. They had systematic and in-depth discussions on various kinds of theories and relationships, including those between literature and society, literature and culture, literature and religion etc and the connection between creation and criticism. Because it is a “dialogue”, there are always flashes of wisdom and wit. At the same time, they advocate a sincere and friendly dialogue, rather than a “criticism” that takes things out of context and makes conclusions based on isolated events. The book Wang Gan’s Essays, which won the Lu Xun Literature Prize, features more than 50 selected essays written by Wang Gan over a number of years, covering history, culture, geography, fashion and other fields, involving all traditional arts and the most popular cultural symbols.
With a smart brush and sharp strokes, Wang Gan thinks about many issues in the current culture and has a strong knowledge and interest. The essay collection A Decade in Beijing tells from seven aspects that Wang Gan came to Beijing as a cultural observer and hid to record his life there, touching on literature, art, fashion, football and other fields. He talks about the “homes” of fish, how fish are used as “watchers”, the “tanks” of fish, the fish as “football fans”, how fish get “homesick”, the fish’s view of the concept of “home”, and the “intertextuality” between different types of fish. It is a metaphor depicting Wang Gan’s relationship with Beijing as a relationship between fish and water. His style is lively, sharp, and microscopic without losing sight of the big picture and has rich implied meaning.
In January 2018, Wang Gan’s thoughts after working in the literary world for nearly forty years were published in Wang Gan’s Anthology (11 volumes) by the Writers’ Publishing House.
